in linux ,what's differences among these bin directories following?

/usr/local/sbin /usr/local/bin /sbin /bin /usr/sbin /usr/bin /root/bin

in nutshell:

  • /bin , /sbin contain essential binaries non-privileged , privileged users
  • /usr/bin , /usr/sbin contain non-essential binaries (may unavailable in single-user mode)
  • /usr/local/bin , /usr/local/sbin contain binaries specific host
  • ~/bin , /root/bin contain binaries specific user, root in latter case

see wikipedia article on filesystem hierarchy standard.
